Intensive aquaculture practices render fish/shrimp further vulnerable to infectious diseases, resulting in economic losses due to chemotherapy expenses and Shrimp mortality.
Bacterial diseases may cause great losses in shrimp production, particularly during the wintering period. Moreover, excessive application of antibiotics leads to antibiotic resistance in fish & prawn, which is considered a global threat to public health as the antibiotic-resistant genes could transfer to humans, animals, and other aquatic organisms.

The risk of disease in farmed fish & prawn may be reduced by increasing their resistance level against infections. Vitamins are organic compounds that are essential for life as they are required in trace amounts for normal growth, reproduction, and health. Vitamin C induces immune responses, including macrophage infiltration, cell proliferation, natural killer cell activity, complement activity, lysozymes levels, phagocytic activity of leucocytes, development of cytokines, and antibody concentrations.
Dietary vitamin C supplementation is reported to enhance growth and immune response in fish & prawn. The use of vitamins as feed additives is recommended in the diets of farmed fish. Vitamin C has an important role as an immuno-stimulant and an antioxidant scavenger. Enhancement of growth rate and weight gain observed in fish & prawn upon vitamin C supplementation could be ascribed to the vitamin C-induced stimulation of protein synthesis.
