Potassium permanganate (KMnO4)

Potassium permanganate (KMnO₄) can be used as an oxidizing agent for disinfection on hatcheries and aquaculture facilities. It is also used as a water treatment additive to react with organic matter in a pond. It is a strong oxidizing agent with good antimicrobial activity.

It releases nascent oxygen when dissolved in water. The nascent oxygen destroys microorganisms as well as organic substances through its oxidizing action. KMnO₄ is an oxidizing agent that will react with any organic matter in a pond including algae, bacteria, fish, and organic bottom sediments.

It has been used in fish ponds to treat common fish pathogens such as gill parasites and external bacterial and fungal infections. Contrary to some reports, KMnO₄ does not add significant amounts of oxygen to water and actually decreases dissolved oxygen concentrations by killing algae that produce much of the oxygen in ponds.

Application: Mix 1 kg of Potassium Permanganate in 20 lts. of pond water and apply evenly in the pond during day time.

Dosage: 2–3 kgs per Acre of pond.
